The Recipe How-To

Now that you have gathered all the ingredients, let’s start creating our Blackberry Roll Recipe. This recipe makes a dozen of rolls and will surely satisfy your sweet cravings. Follow these simple steps to achieve the perfect blackberry rolls:

Step 1: Make the Dough

In a medium bowl, sift together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 3 tablespoons of sugar. Add 1/4 cup of shortening and 1/4 cup of butter. Using a pastry blender or a fork, cut the shortening and butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add 1/2 cup of milk while stirring with a fork until the dough forms a ball. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 1 minute.

Step 2: Prepare the Filling

In a separate bowl, mix 2 cups of fresh or frozen blackberries with 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, and 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Set aside.

Step 3: Roll and Fill the Dough

Roll out the dough into a 1/4-inch thick rectangle. Spread the blackberry jam over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges. Spread the blackberry filling over the jam. Roll up the dough tightly, starting from the long side closest to you. Pinch the seams to seal.

Step 4: Cut and Bake

Cut the roll into 12 slices. Place the slices onto a greased 9×13-inch baking pan. Bake at 375°F for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 5: Add the Frosting

While the rolls are still warm, spread the cream cheese frosting over them. To make the frosting, mix 4 ounces of cream cheese, 1/4 cup of butter, 2 cups of powdered sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth.

Serve and enjoy your delicious Blackberry Sweet Rolls!

Substitutions and Variations

“A sweet and tangy treat perfect for any occasion.”

Are you looking to switch things up with your blackberry roll recipe? Here are some substitutions and variations you may want to try:

– Frozen Blackberries: If fresh blackberries are not available, you can use frozen blackberries instead. Just make sure to thaw them beforehand and drain any excess liquid to avoid a soggy roll.

– Cream Cheese Frosting: If you’re not a fan of cream cheese, you can swap it out for a vanilla or lemon glaze. Just mix powdered sugar with lemon juice or vanilla extract until you achieve your desired consistency.

– Shortening: While shortening is commonly used in sweet rolls, you can use butter instead if you prefer the taste. Just keep in mind that it may affect the texture slightly.

– Goat Cheese: Looking to add a savory twist to your blackberry rolls? Try topping them with crumbled goat cheese instead of cream cheese frosting. The tangy flavor of the cheese pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the blackberries.

– Puff Pastry Roll: For a quicker version of the blackberry roll, you can use a pre-made puff pastry sheet instead of making the dough from scratch. Roll out the pastry sheet, spread blackberry jam on top, and add a layer of fresh blackberries before rolling it up and baking according to the package instructions.

– Cinnamon Rolls: If you’re a fan of cinnamon buns, you can use the same dough recipe and simply swap out the blackberry filling for a cinnamon-sugar mixture. Roll the dough into a log, slice into rounds, and bake in a muffin tin for individual servings.

– Blackberry Lemon Cake Roll: For a more elaborate dessert, you can turn the blackberry roll recipe into a jelly roll or sponge cake. Bake the cake in a sheet pan, spread blackberry jam and fresh blackberries on top, roll it up, and dust with powdered sugar.

No matter how you choose to make your blackberry rolls, they are sure to be a hit with family and friends.

Serving and Pairing

“Step-by-step instructions to help you create the perfect roll.”

Once you’ve baked a batch of these delicious blackberry sweet rolls, you’ll want to serve them warm and fresh out of the oven. The aroma of the cinnamon and blackberries will fill your kitchen and make your mouth water. These rolls are perfect for breakfast, brunch or as a sweet snack.

To make the serving even more indulgent, consider topping each roll with a dollop of cream cheese frosting or a drizzle of blackberry jam. The cream cheese frosting adds a tangy and sweet flavor to the rolls, while the blackberry jam adds a tart and fruity taste.

For pairing, I recommend serving these blackberry sweet rolls with a cup of freshly brewed coffee, a glass of cold milk, or even a sparkling wine. The coffee complements the warm and cozy flavors of the cinnamon and blackberries, while the milk balances the sweetness of the rolls. The sparkling wine adds a touch of elegance and a perfect pairing for a special occasion.

If you’re serving these rolls for a brunch or breakfast gathering, consider pairing them with a savory dish such as eggs, bacon or sausage. The savory flavors will balance the sweetness of the rolls and make for a well-rounded meal.

These blackberry sweet rolls are a versatile treat that can be enjoyed any time of the day. Whether you’re serving them for breakfast or as a dessert, they’re sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

“Fresh blackberries add a burst of flavor to every bite.”

This Blackberry Roll Recipe is perfect for make-ahead preparation, storing and reheating. You can make the rolls ahead of time and reheat them later for a quick and delicious breakfast or dessert.

To make the rolls ahead of time, prepare the dough and filling as instructed in section (4) The Recipe How-To. Instead of baking the rolls, cover them tightly with plastic wrap and store them in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. When you’re ready to bake them, let them sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before baking as directed.

If you have leftover rolls, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days. To reheat, simply place the rolls in the microwave or oven until warm.

For a quick and easy breakfast or snack, freeze the baked rolls for up to three months. To reheat, let the rolls thaw at room temperature for about 30 minutes and then reheat in the microwave or oven until warm.

Additionally, you can make a blackberry sauce to serve with the rolls. To make the sauce, cook 1 cup of blackberries, 1/4 cup of water, and 1/4 cup of granulated sugar in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the blackberries break down. Then, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the seeds and stir in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.

Overall, this recipe is perfect for make-ahead preparation and easy reheating. The blackberry sauce adds an extra burst of flavor and makes for a delicious breakfast or dessert.

Tips for Perfect Results

“Warm and gooey, this Blackberry Roll is comfort food at its finest.”

For the best results, follow these tips for making the perfect Blackberry Roll Recipe:

1. Don’t overwork the dough: When making the dough, mix it together just until it comes together. Overworking the dough can lead to tough, dense rolls.

2. Use fresh blackberries: Fresh blackberries are the star of this recipe, so make sure you use ripe, juicy ones. If you can’t find fresh blackberries, frozen ones will work, but make sure to thaw them first and drain any excess liquid.

3. Sift the dry ingredients: Sifting the flour, baking powder, and salt together not only helps to combine them evenly but also aerates the flour, resulting in a lighter, fluffier dough.

4. Use a pastry cutter: A pastry cutter is the best tool for cutting the butter and shortening into the dry ingredients. It ensures that the fat is evenly distributed throughout the dough, resulting in a tender, flaky texture.

5. Use parchment paper: Lining the baking dish with parchment paper will prevent the rolls from sticking and also make for easy clean-up.

6. Let the rolls rise: After rolling out the dough and filling it with the blackberry mixture, let the rolls rise in a warm, draft-free spot for 30 minutes to an hour. This will give them time to puff up and become light and fluffy.

7. Don’t overfill the rolls: Be careful not to overfill the rolls with the blackberry mixture. Too much filling can cause the rolls to burst open and leak out while baking.

8. Use cream cheese frosting: The tangy sweetness of the cream cheese frosting is the perfect complement to the tart blackberries. Make sure to let the rolls cool slightly before spreading the frosting on top.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to make the perfect Blackberry Roll Recipe every time. Enjoy!
