Sweet, fluffy, and infused with a hint of rum, these buns are a delicious way to start your day.

Now that we have our ingredients ready, let’s start making these delicious Rum Buns!

Step 1: Activation of the Yeast

In a small bowl, mix together 1/4 cup warm water and 1 teaspoon sugar. Sprinkle 1 packet dry yeast over the top and let it sit for 5 minutes or until it becomes foamy.

Step 2: Preparing the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1/2 cup unsalted butter, 1/4 cup sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon salt until fluffy. Add 2 beaten eggs, 1/4 cup milk, 1 teaspoon rum extract, and the activated yeast mixture, and mix until well combined. Gradually add 2 cups all-purpose flour and mix until you have a smooth and elastic dough.

Step 3: Kneading the Dough

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.

Step 4: Making the Rum Filling

While the dough is rising, prepare the rum filling. In a medium saucepan, mix together 1/2 cup flagship rum, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup raisins, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens and becomes sticky, about 10-15 minutes.

Step 5: Assembling and Baking the Buns

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a rectangle shape. Spread 4 tablespoons softened butter over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges. Pour the rum filling over the butter, spreading it to the edges. Roll the dough up tightly, starting from the long edge, and pinch the seam to seal it. Cut the dough into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased baking dish. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the buns are golden brown.

Step 6: Glazing the Buns

While the buns are still hot, mix together 1/2 cup powdered sugar and 1-2 tablespoons flagship rum to make a glaze. Drizzle the glaze over the buns and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

There are a few ways to make substitutions and variations to this rum buns recipe to suit your taste or dietary preferences. Here are some suggestions:

– Raisins: If you’re not a fan of raisins, you can easily swap them out for other dried fruits such as cranberries, apricots, or cherries. You could also omit the dried fruit altogether and just have plain rum buns.

– Rum: The rum is a key ingredient in this recipe, but if you don’t consume alcohol or want to make these buns kid-friendly, you can substitute the rum with rum extract or apple rum flavoring.

– Butter: You could use unsalted butter instead of salted butter to reduce the overall sodium content of the recipe. Alternatively, you could use a vegan butter substitute to make the buns dairy-free.

– Milk: You could use a non-dairy milk such as almond milk or oat milk to make the recipe vegan-friendly.

– Sugar: Brown sugar adds a nice depth of flavor to the buns, but you could also use granulated sugar or coconut sugar as a substitute.

– Cinnamon: If you’re a fan of cinnamon, you could add more cinnamon to the recipe to make it more pronounced. Alternatively, you could omit the cinnamon altogether if you don’t like it.

– Dough: You could use this dough recipe to make other baked goods such as cinnamon rolls or sticky buns. Just roll out the dough, add your desired filling, and bake according to the instructions.

By making these substitutions and variations, you can customize the recipe to your liking and make it your own.

Serving and Pairing

These delicious rum buns are the perfect pastry to enjoy with a cup of coffee or tea in the morning. They also make a great dessert to serve after dinner. You can serve these warm or at room temperature, and they are sure to be a hit with your guests.

To take your rum buns to the next level, consider pairing them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. The sweetness of the ice cream or whipped cream perfectly complements the rich and buttery flavor of the buns.

If you are feeling adventurous, you could also pair your rum buns with a glass of apple rum or a hot buttered rum. The flavors of the rum will enhance the rich and warm flavors of the buns, creating a tasty and satisfying combination.

If you are serving these for breakfast or brunch, consider adding some fresh fruit on the side. A few slices of juicy oranges or some sweet strawberries will add a refreshing burst of flavor to your meal.

No matter how you choose to serve your rum buns, they are sure to be a crowd-pleaser. So go ahead and indulge in this decadent and delicious treat.

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

One of the things that makes rum buns such a great recipe is how easily they can be made ahead of time. If you want to get a head start on breakfast or brunch, you can prepare the dough up to a day in advance and then store it in the refrigerator overnight. This will give the flavor time to develop and the dough to rise, making for an even more delicious end result.

Once you’ve baked your rum buns, you can store them at room temperature in an airtight container for up to two days. They will still be fresh and delicious, but if you want to extend their shelf life, you can also freeze them for up to two months. Just make sure to wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and then place them in a resealable freezer bag.

When it comes time to reheat your rum buns, there are a few different options. You can either microwave them for 10-15 seconds to warm them up, or you can pop them in a 350°F oven for 5-10 minutes until they are heated through. If you want to add a little extra flavor, you can brush them with a mixture of melted butter and rum extract before reheating. This will give them that hot buttered rum flavor that is so delicious.

With these storing and reheating tips, you can enjoy your rum buns any time of day, whether it’s for breakfast, brunch, or a quick snack on the go.

Tips for Perfect Results

When it comes to baking, it’s the little things that can make a big difference in the final product. Here are a few tips to ensure your rum buns come out perfectly every time.

First and foremost, make sure all of your ingredients are at room temperature before you start. This includes the eggs, milk, and butter. Room temperature ingredients combine more easily and create a smoother dough.

When making the dough, be sure to not overwork it. Overworking the dough can cause it to become tough and chewy. Mix the dough until it just comes together and then let it rise until it has doubled in size.

When adding the raisins, be sure to soak them in hot water for about 10 minutes before adding them to the dough. This will plump them up and make them softer.

To get a beautifully golden brown exterior, brush the tops of the buns with an egg wash before baking. This will give them a nice shine and a crispy crust.

When it comes to the rum glaze, be sure to let the buns cool for a few minutes before pouring it on. This will help the glaze to stick to the buns rather than just sliding off.

Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of rum. While flagship rum is the traditional choice for rum buns, hogate rum or even apple rum can add a unique twist to the recipe.

Follow these tips and you’ll have perfectly soft, buttery, and flavorful rum buns every time.
