  • Blue Plate Mayonnaise: This is an optional ingredient, but if you’re looking for an extra kick of flavor, try adding a dollop of Blue Plate Mayonnaise to the crawfish filling.
  • Salt: Don’t forget the salt! It’s an essential ingredient in any bread recipe.

Now that we have all our ingredients, let’s get started on making this delicious Taste of Louisiana Spiced Bread Braid Recipe.

The Recipe How-To

“The perfect balance of sweet and spicy in every bite.”

Preparing the Dough

The first step in making the Louisiana spiced bread braid is to prepare the dough. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 ¼ teaspoons of fast-rising yeast with 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of salt.

In a small saucepan, heat 1 minced garlic clove with ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes, ½ teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of dried parsley, 1 teaspoon of dried oregano, 1 teaspoon of hot paprika, and 1 teaspoon of paprika in 1 cup of water. Heat the mixture until it reaches 120-130°F.

Slowly add the spiced water mixture to the yeast mixture along with 2 ¾ cups of bread flour. Mix until the dough forms a ball.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10-15 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Making the Filling

While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In a medium mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of ricotta cheese with 2 tablespoons of tomato paste, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Fold in 1 pound of crawfish and set aside.

Forming the Bread Braid

After the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface to form a rectangle. Spoon the crawfish mixture down the center of the dough, leaving about 1 inch on each side.

Using a sharp knife or kitchen scissors, cut diagonal strips on both sides of the filling. Fold the strips at an angle across the filling, alternating sides until the entire filling is covered.

Carefully transfer the bread braid to a greased baking sheet and let it rise for another 30 minutes.

Baking and Serving

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Brush the bread braid with an egg wash made with 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of water.

Bake the bread braid for 30-35 minutes or until it turns golden brown.

Let the bread braid cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Enjoy the taste of Louisiana with this delicious spiced bread braid recipe!

Substitutions and Variations

“The beautifully braided bread that’s almost too pretty to eat…almost.”

One of the best things about this recipe is that it’s incredibly versatile, and there are plenty of ways to make it your own. Here are some substitutions and variations you can try:

– Cheese: Instead of ricotta cheese, you can use cream cheese, cottage cheese, or even shredded cheddar or mozzarella for a more gooey texture.

– Spices: If you want to switch up the flavor profile, you can experiment with different spices. Try adding some cumin or coriander for a bit of smokiness, or use fresh herbs like basil, thyme, or chives for a more herbaceous taste.

– Proteins: For a more traditional Louisiana twist, you can swap the crawfish for shrimp, crab, or even alligator. Or, skip the seafood altogether and add some cooked and crumbled sausage or shredded chicken.

– Vegetables: If you want to add some more veggies, you can mix in some diced bell peppers, onions, or celery for a bit of crunch, or throw in some sliced mushrooms for a more earthy flavor.

– Bread: While this recipe calls for French bread dough, you can also use other types of bread dough, like challah or garlic bread. Or, try making a sweet version by using cardamom bread or pulla dough and filling it with cranberries or other dried fruits.

– Shape: Instead of braiding the dough, you can roll it into a wreath or braid it into a ring shape. Or, bake it in a bundt pan for a more dramatic presentation.

– Heat: If you like things spicy, you can increase the amount of red pepper flakes or hot paprika, or add some diced jalapenos or habaneros for an extra kick.

Remember, cooking is all about experimentation and finding what works best for you. Don’t be afraid to try new things and make this recipe your own!

Tips for Perfect Results

When it comes to baking, there are a few tips and tricks that can make all the difference in the final outcome of your recipe. Here are some tips to help you achieve perfect results with your Taste of Louisiana Spiced Bread Braid recipe:

1. Use fresh ingredients: Make sure all of your ingredients are fresh, especially your yeast. Old or expired yeast can lead to a bread that doesn’t rise properly.

2. Measure accurately: Measuring ingredients accurately is crucial to the success of any recipe. Use measuring cups and spoons to ensure you’re using the right amount of each ingredient.

3. Knead the dough properly: Kneading the dough helps to activate the gluten in the flour, which gives bread its structure and texture. Be sure to knead the dough for the recommended amount of time to achieve the perfect texture.

4. Let the dough rise in a warm place: Yeast needs warmth to activate, so make sure you let your dough rise in a warm, draft-free place. A good place to let your dough rise is in a warm oven with the light on.

5. Don’t over-bake: Over-baking can lead to a dry and tough bread. Keep an eye on your bread as it bakes and use a thermometer to ensure it’s fully cooked without overcooking.

6. Brush with an egg wash: Brushing your bread with an egg wash before baking can give it a beautiful golden color and a shiny finish.

7. Let the bread cool before slicing: It can be tempting to slice into your bread as soon as it comes out of the oven, but letting it cool for at least 15 minutes will help it retain its shape and texture.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to achieve perfect results with your Taste of Louisiana Spiced Bread Braid recipe.
