The Recipe How-To

Now that we have gathered all the necessary ingredients, let’s dive into the recipe. This recipe is quite simple, so even if you are a beginner, you will be able to make it perfectly.

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast with 1/4 cup of cold water and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.

Step 2: Mix the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, add the yeast mixture, 1/4 cup of liquid honey, 1/4 cup of melted butter, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon of salt and 2 cups of all-purpose flour. Mix all the ingredients until it forms a sticky dough.

Step 3: Add Oats

Add 1/2 cup of quick-cooking oats to the dough and mix it well. Gradually add in 1 cup of all-purpose flour until the dough becomes smooth and doesn’t stick to your hand.

Step 4: Knead the Dough

Place the dough on a well-floured surface and knead it for 5-7 minutes until it becomes soft and elastic.

Step 5: First Rise

Put the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until the dough doubles in size.

Step 6: Shape the Dough

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a greased baking sheet.

Step 7: Second Rise

Cover the dough balls with a damp cloth and let them rise in a warm place for 30 minutes or until they double in size.

Step 8: Bake the Buns

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the buns with 1/4 cup of water and sprinkle some rolled oats on top. Bake them for 15-20 minutes or until they turn golden brown.

Step 9: Enjoy!

Take the buns out of the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. These honey oatmeal buns Subway style by Uncle Bill Recipe are best served warm with a pat of butter or your favorite sandwich filling.

Substitutions and Variations

There are endless possibilities for substitutions and variations with this recipe, making it easy to customize the buns to your liking. Here are some ideas to get you started:

– Multigrain: Swap out the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour or a multigrain flour blend to make the buns even heartier and healthier. You can also add in some rolled oats or 9-grain cereal for extra texture.

– Sourdough: For a tangy twist, use active sourdough starter instead of yeast. Note that this will require a longer rising time, so plan accordingly.

– Honey and Oats: You can adjust the amount of honey and oats to your taste. If you want a sweeter bun, add more honey, and if you want a denser, oatier bun, add more oats.

– Vegan: To make the buns vegan, replace the eggs with flax eggs (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed + 3 tablespoons water per egg), and use vegan butter or coconut oil instead of regular butter.

– Gluten-Free: Use a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend in place of the regular flour, and make sure your oats are certified gluten-free as well. You may need to adjust the liquid and yeast amounts slightly for best results.

– No-Knead: If you don’t want to fuss with kneading the dough, you can try a no-knead version of this recipe. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and let the dough rise for 12-18 hours before shaping and baking.

These are just a few ideas to get you started on your honey oatmeal bun journey. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find your own perfect combination of flavors and textures.

Tips for Perfect Results

Here are some tips to ensure that your Honey Oatmeal Buns come out perfect every time!

1. Use Quick-Cooking Oats

Quick-cooking oats give the buns a tender texture without being too dense. Rolled oats or regular oatmeal can be used, but the buns will be thicker and chewier.

2. Don’t Overwork the Dough

When mixing the dough, be careful not to overwork it. The dough should be slightly sticky to the touch, but not overly sticky. Overworking the dough can result in tough buns.

3. Use Active Dry Yeast

Active dry yeast is the best yeast to use for this recipe. Make sure the yeast is fresh and not expired. If the yeast is not fresh, the buns may not rise properly.

4. Proof the Yeast

Proofing the yeast is an important step in the bread-making process. It ensures that the yeast is active and ready to do its job. To proof the yeast, mix it with warm water and a pinch of sugar. If the yeast is active, it will start to bubble and foam.

5. Use Cold Water and Butter

Using cold water and butter helps to keep the dough at the right temperature. If the dough gets too warm, the yeast may not work properly and the buns may not rise.

6. Let the Dough Rise Twice

Letting the dough rise twice helps to develop the flavor and texture of the buns. The first rise should be in a warm place for about an hour, or until the dough has doubled in size. The second rise should be after the buns have been shaped, and should be for about 30 minutes.

7. Brush with Honey

Brushing the buns with honey before baking gives them a beautiful golden color and a sweet flavor.

8. Bake at the Right Temperature

Bake the buns at 375°F for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown on the outside and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to make delicious Honey Oatmeal Buns that are perfect every time!

In conclusion, these honey oatmeal buns are a must-try for anyone who loves freshly baked bread. The recipe is easy to follow, and the results are nothing short of delicious.
