  • To make this recipe into an artisan bread, increase the amount of water to create a 100% hydration dough, and let it rise for longer periods of time.
  • Don’t skip the step of letting the dough rise, as this is essential for helping the bread rise and develop flavor.
  • If you’re using a bread machine or bread maker, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results.

Now that you have made your own homemade bread, slice it up and enjoy it fresh or use it to make toast or sandwiches. The possibilities are endless!

Substitutions and Variations

Making substitutions and variations to this 100% whole wheat bread recipe is a great way to customize it to your liking. Here are some ideas to get you started:

– Flour: You can use a combination of white flour and whole wheat flour if you prefer a lighter texture. However, keep in mind that this will no longer be a 100% whole wheat bread recipe.

– Yeast: If you don’t have active dry yeast, you can use instant yeast instead. Use the same amount and skip the step of activating it in warm water.

– Sugar: Light brown sugar adds a subtle sweetness to the bread, but you can use honey or molasses instead. Just make sure to adjust the amount based on your preference.

– Milk: You can use any type of milk you have on hand, such as almond milk or soy milk. If you don’t have milk, you can use water instead.

– Oil: Olive oil adds flavor to the bread, but you can use any other type of oil you prefer.

– Salt: You can use sea salt instead of regular salt for a different flavor.

– Hydration: The hydration of the dough plays a key role in the texture of the bread. If you want a denser bread, reduce the amount of water. If you want a lighter bread, increase the amount of water.

With these substitutions and variations, you can create a bread that is uniquely yours. Experiment and have fun!

Serving and Pairing

This 100% whole wheat bread recipe is versatile and can be served in many ways. I love to slice it thick and serve it with a hearty soup or stew, or toasted with a smear of butter and jam for breakfast. To add a little extra flavor, you can also experiment with adding herbs, spices, or nuts to the dough before baking. This bread is also a great accompaniment to a charcuterie board or cheese platter, making it an excellent addition to any gathering or potluck.

Overall, this 100% whole wheat bread recipe is a delicious and nutritious addition to any meal or snack. Its versatility and hearty flavor make it a go-to bread for all occasions.

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

Making this 100% whole wheat bread recipe is a great way to stock up your pantry with fresh and healthy homemade bread. Fortunately, this recipe is easy to make and can be stored for a few days without losing its flavor and texture.

To make ahead, simply prepare the dough according to the recipe instructions, let it rise, and then shape it into a loaf. Instead of baking it right away, cover it with plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. This will give the bread time to ferment and develop more complex flavors. When you’re ready to bake, take it out of the fridge and let it rise to room temperature for about an hour before baking.

For longer storage, you can freeze whole loaves or slices of bread. Simply wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and place them in a freezer-safe container. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. To thaw, take the bread out of the freezer and let it come to room temperature before reheating.

To reheat your bread, preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Place the bread on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes or until heated through. Alternatively, you can reheat individual slices in a toaster or toaster oven. This will give the bread a nice crispy crust and warm, soft center.

Remember, homemade bread is best enjoyed fresh, so try to consume it within a few days of baking. However, with the right storage techniques, you can still enjoy your homemade 100% whole wheat bread for days to come.

Tips for Perfect Results

Making 100% whole wheat bread is not an easy task. However, with the right techniques and tips, you can make a perfect loaf of bread every time. Here are some tips to help you get the perfect results every time you make this recipe.

Firstly, make sure to use the right flour. Using 100% whole wheat flour is essential for this recipe. Do not substitute white flour for whole wheat flour as it will not give the same texture or flavor to the bread.

Secondly, make sure to activate the yeast. It is important to activate the active dry yeast in warm water before adding it to the dough. This ensures that the yeast is fully active and will help the bread rise properly.

Thirdly, knead the dough well. Kneading the dough is essential to develop the gluten, which gives the bread its structure and texture. Knead the dough for at least 10 minutes to get the desired texture.

Fourthly, use warm water and milk. Using warm water and milk helps the bread rise properly. If the liquid is too cold, the yeast will not activate, and the bread will not rise.

Fifthly, let the bread rise in a warm place. The bread needs to rise in a warm place to properly activate the yeast. A warm room with a temperature of around 80°F is ideal for rising the bread.

Sixthly, add salt and sugar to the dough. Salt and sugar help to enhance the flavor of the bread. Add the salt and sugar to the dough after the yeast has been activated.

Seventhly, use a stand mixer. A stand mixer makes the bread-making process much easier. It allows you to knead the dough for a longer time without getting tired, and it ensures that the dough is properly mixed.

Lastly, let the bread cool before slicing. It is important to let the bread cool completely before slicing it. This allows the bread to set properly and ensures that it does not become too dense.

By following these tips, you can make a perfect loaf of 100% whole wheat bread every time.
